This year at Gamescom I was fortunate to play the new Crazy Taxi game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour.

Right from the very first moments accompanied by the classic “ya ya ya ya ya” of “All I want” by The Offspring I felt like I was returning to childhood. In front of me there was a good old crazy taxi, feeling the same as it was back in the days when I first launched original Crazy Taxi game on Dreamcast.

While, naturally, the game was modernized to today’s standards, all the basic mechanics were there: tricks like "crazy drift" and "crazy dash", picking up and delivering passengers accompanied by the good old The Offspring soundtrack, unrealistic physics and lots of fun. All of that brought me straight back to the times when games felt different.

But, while having an old-school foundation, the game was of course updated with a bunch of new stuff to follow modern trends and mechanics.

One of the biggest changes noticeable from start is having a map with delivery locations, available passengers for pickup, missions, shortcuts etc. Yes, someone may say that it is a step towards simplification, as now in order to get high score you don’t need to memorize the map to pick the short route, to know where best passengers are located and so on. But to be honest for me it is a great addition because it balances between being helpful but not guiding you by hand. For example, it doesn’t draw you a direct route, you can still decide how you want to drive to the destination.

Among other changes, now there is a story line, that will connect all 5 worlds and locations into one story of Axel tracking down the people who stole his Taxi. At Gamescom SEGA showed Germany map plus we already know about West Coast inspired by San Francisco. The other three are still unknown. There will also be a multiplayer for up to 6 players competing to deliver the highest amount of passengers.

Besides delivering passengers and following the story line, there are also separate missions which are extremely fun. For example, we could help a stuntman to perform the longest fly by accelerating and then stopping to launch him out of the car. There were also missions with the pizza delivery, fishing, race against a man married to his own car and many others.

Another notable addition, the original soundtrack with The Offspring and Bad Religion is back. And yes, «All I Want» and «Change the World» by The Offspring are confirmed.

You may notice that I’m referring a lot to the original Crazy Taxi released in 1999 even though there were other games released after that like Crazy Taxi 2 in 2001 and Crazy Taxi 3 in 2002 and this is not a coincidence. Crazy Taxi: World Tour is looking a lot on the original game and to support that creator of the original Crazy Taxi, Kenji Kanno is returning as creative producer.

Although aimed a lot at old fans, Crazy Taxi: World Tour is extremely friendly to new gamers who have never played the previous games in the series. It is very easy to pick up and just start having fun from the very first seconds. The game feels like something different among modern projects. It doesn’t require long tutorials, doesn’t open with 10 minutes long cinematic to tell the story. You just take the wheel, pick up the passenger and start driving. Pure fun!

One thing that is actually concerning is whether there will be enough content. All the activities in the demo were diverse but very short. Passenger delivery was locked to just 60 seconds and in general 5 cities doesn’t seem like a lot. But let’s wait for more extended gameplay and demo to make conclusions.

Overall, the game was one of the gems of this year’s Gamescom for me and I’m definitely looking forward to playing and getting 100% achievement completion once it is released.

By the way, you can still apply for closed network test that will happen in September and it is a great opportunity to try the game yourself so I highly recommend it.
